How to Prepare for Your First Wax

If you've never been waxed before, it's natural to feel a little nervous — but knowing what to do beforehand makes the whole experience smoother and more comfortable. A few simple steps in the days leading up to your appointment make a real difference.

Here's our beginner's guide from the waxing team at Royal Beauty Salon in Warsaw.

Grow your hair to the right length

Hair needs to be about 5mm long — roughly two to three weeks of growth — so the wax can grip it. Resist the urge to shave beforehand; if hair is too short, the wax can't remove it cleanly.

Exfoliate a couple of days before

Gently exfoliating two or three days ahead removes dead skin and helps the wax adhere to the hair, not the skin. Don't exfoliate on the day itself, as skin may be too sensitive.

Avoid heat and sun

Skip sunbathing, saunas and hot tubs right before your appointment. Skin that's already warm or sun-exposed is more sensitive to waxing.

Skip caffeine and time it well

Caffeine can heighten sensitivity, so go easy on coffee beforehand. If you're sensitive around your cycle, try to book a few days after your period when skin is less reactive.

What to expect on the day

Your therapist will talk you through everything and keep you comfortable. There's a brief sting as the wax is removed, but it passes quickly — and the smooth results last for weeks.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the first wax hurt more?

The first wax can feel more sensitive because the hair is at full thickness. With regular appointments, regrowth becomes finer and waxing gets more comfortable each time.

Should I shave before my waxing appointment?

No. Let your hair grow to about 5mm so the wax can grip it. Shaving beforehand means the hair is too short to remove cleanly.
