Our senior stylists at Royal Beauty Salon in Warsaw share the nine tips they give every client who leaves with a keratin or silk-botox smoothing treatment.
1. Wait before your first wash
Give the treatment time to fully bond with your hair. Depending on the formula, your stylist may advise waiting up to 48–72 hours before your first wash. Washing too soon can rinse out keratin before it sets.
2. Switch to a sulphate-free shampoo
Sulphates strip keratin from the hair shaft and shorten the life of your treatment dramatically. A gentle, sulphate-free and sodium-chloride-free shampoo is the single most important change you can make.
3. Wash less often
Every wash gradually loosens the treatment. Stretching to two or three washes a week — using dry shampoo in between — keeps your smoothing intact for longer.
4. Use lukewarm, not hot, water
Very hot water opens the hair cuticle and releases keratin faster. Rinse with lukewarm or cool water to seal the cuticle and lock in shine.
5. Protect hair from chlorine and salt
Chlorinated pools and salt water are harsh on treated hair. Wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner before swimming, then rinse thoroughly afterwards.
6. Mind your heat styling
Keratin makes hair easier to style, so you need less heat. When you do use tools, keep temperatures moderate and always apply a heat protectant.
